Abstract

General anesthesia is an anesthetic procedure that causes loss of consciousness during surgery. One of the indicators of successful general anesthesia is the patient's recovery time of consciousness. Recovery time can be influenced by various factors, one of which is the ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) physical status. The higher the ASA physical status, the more complex the patient's systemic condition, which may delay the recovery of consciousness. This study aimed to determine the relationship between ASA physical status and recovery time in patients undergoing general anesthesia at dr. R. Goeteng Taroenadibrata Regional Hospital, Purbalingga. This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational analytic design using a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 151 respondents selected through consecutive sampling. Data were collected using medical records, observation sheets, and the Modified Aldrete Score. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank test. The results showed that most patients with ASA I physical status experienced normal recovery time, whereas most patients with ASA II physical status and all patients with ASA III physical status experienced delayed recovery time. The Spearman Rank test revealed a p-value of 0.000 and a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.790, indicating a significant relationship with a strong correlation between ASA physical status and recovery time. The higher the patient's ASA physical status, the longer the recovery time. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between ASA physical status and recovery time in patients undergoing general anesthesia.
