Abstract

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation and environmental pollution triggers an increase in free radicals in the skin, leading to oxidative stress and premature aging. Purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) contain high antioxidant compounds such as anthocyanins and flavonoids; however, conventional topical applications face stability and penetration challenges. Nanoemulsions serve as a solution to enhance the penetration and stability of active compounds. This study aimed to analyze the effect of Tween 80 and propylene glycol variations on the characteristics of nanoemulsion lotion from purple sweet potato leaves. This laboratory experimental research employed a completely randomized design (CRD) using five formulas with varying concentrations of Tween 80 (30-35%) and propylene glycol (5-15%). The extract was obtained through maceration using 96% ethanol and formulated into a nanoemulsion lotion using a high-speed homogenization method. Evaluations included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, particle size, and polydispersity index (PDI) tests. The results showed that all formulas produced semisolid, homogeneous preparations with pH of 5.21-6.31, viscosity of 2,063-3,075 cPs, spreadability of 6.17–7.88 cm, and adhesion of 4.63–5.96 seconds. Formula F4 (Tween 80:propylene glycol 55:15) exhibited the best characteristics with the smallest particle size of 128.54 nm and PDI of 0.187. Variations in Tween 80 and propylene glycol significantly influenced the characteristics of the nanoemulsion lotion. Formula F4 is recommended as the optimal formulation for developing nanoemulsion lotions based on purple sweet potato leaves.
