Abstract

Improper storage of grain and rice often trigger post-harvest pest infestations that reduce food quantity and quality. Many traditional farmers are not yet aware of this threat. This study aims to identify post-harvest insect pest species, estimate their populations, and determine effective traps in traditional rice and paddy warehouses. The research results are expected to serve as a basis for farmers in selecting appropriate control measures. The study was conducted from February to May 2026 in traditional storage facilities in Tandam Hilir Dua Village, Hamparan Perak District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. Insect identification was performed at the Entomology Laboratory of the North Sumatra Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center (BBKHIT North Sumatra). Research methods included rice sampling, grain sampling, setting ultraviolet light traps and yellow sticky traps inside the storage facility. Eleven insect pests were found: Sitotroga cerealella, Rhyzopertha dominica, Cryptolestes ferrugineus, Cryptolestes pusillus, Sitophilus oryzae, Tribolium castaneum, Palorus ratzeburgii, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Coelopalorus foveicollis, Alphitobius diaperinus dan Tenebroides mauritanicus. The population of Sitotroga cerealella (12,991 individuals) was higher than that of other stored product pest insects found in the storage, whereas the lowest populations were recorded for Alphitobius diaperinus and Tenebroides mauritanicus (1 individual each). Yellow sticky traps captured more stored product pest insects than ultraviolet light traps, rice sampling method, and grain sampling method.
