Abstract

Introduction: Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is known for its anxiolytic benefits derived from L-theanine, EGCG, and caffeine, which influence neurotransmitters like GABA and dopamine and enhance alpha brain wave activity. Methods: This experimental study employed a post-test only with control group design. The subjects were 27 male Wistar rats induced with anxiety using the Forced Swim Test. Treatment was administered with green tea extract at a dose of 3.6 mg/kgBW. Anxiety levels were measured using the Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) method, focusing on the duration spent in open arms. Statistical analysis was conducted using One-Way ANOVA, followed by post-hoc Tukey tests to identify significant differences between groups. Results: The treatment group showed an average time in open arms of 114.22 seconds, approaching the positive control (fluoxetine ) at 117.67 seconds, and higher than the negative control (Placebo) at 90.33 seconds. Statistical analysis indicated significant differences among treatment groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Green tea extract demonstrated significant anxiolytic effects in reducing anxiety in a rat model.
