Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of signs, denotative meanings, connotative meanings, and myths in the poetry collections Celana, Sudah Ya, Nak?, and Baju by Joko Pinurbo. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The data sources consisted of the poetry collections Celana, Sudah Ya, Nak?, and Baju by Joko Pinurbo, while the research data comprised words, phrases, lines, and stanzas containing semiotic elements. Data were collected through documentation using reading and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, interpretation of denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Joko Pinurbo utilizes everyday objects, such as trousers, clothes, the body, the home, and other domestic symbols, as media for conveying meaning. At the denotative level, the signs represent the literal functions of objects. At the connotative level, the signs convey meanings related to identity, social relationships, spirituality, family, social criticism, and human existence. At the mythical level, the poems represent cultural constructions concerning morality, religiosity, power, affection, and Indonesian social life. This study concludes that Joko Pinurbo's poems possess a complex system of signs that enables them to express philosophical reflections and social criticism through simple, symbolic, and aesthetically rich language.
